IS 1757 / ASTM E23 / EN ISO 148-1
The Charpy test strikes a simply-supported notched specimen horizontally with a pendulum. The energy absorbed to fracture (Joules) quantifies the notch toughness of the material at the test temperature. V-notch (2 mm deep, 0.25 mm root radius) is the standard configuration; U-notch also performed per customer specification.

- ✓Sub-size specimens: 10×7.5, 10×5, and 10×2.5 mm for thin sections
- ✓U-notch specimens per IS 1499 or customer specification

Izod Impact Test
ASTM E23 / BS 131-Part 1
The Izod test strikes a cantilevered notched specimen vertically at the free end. The specimen is gripped in a vice with the notch positioned at the clamp level. Applied to metallic materials per customer or purchaser specification.

Applications of Impact Testing
Structural Steel Qualification
IS 2062 and EN 10025 require Charpy impact values for certain grades and applications.
Pressure Vessel Steel
IBR and ASME BPVC require impact testing for pressure vessel plates and pipe material.
Weld Qualification
WPS/PQR procedures require impact testing of weld metal and HAZ per IS/ASME/EN standards.
Pipeline Material
API 5L line pipe grades require impact testing at specified temperatures.
Low-Temperature Applications
Confirm material suitability for sub-ambient operating conditions.
Failure Investigation
Determine whether brittle fracture was contributed to by low impact toughness.
